It has been quite a season of overwhelm in my circles lately. It feels like putting out fires (literally and metaphorically) has become our specialty.
The impact of the worlds continual chaos over the past couple of years is taking its toll on so many people—in ways that I don’t believe we don’t even understand just yet.
While we are adaptable, resilient, and so so strong, we have also (individually and collectively) weathered way too many storms.
I’ve noticed that my clients, my friends, my family, and myself have all been pushed to our limits in different ways.
Our mental health has suffered worldwide. The world has become a recipe for depression and anxiety, with little reprieve, and it is with no surprise that mental health challenges have grown higher than ever.
As I shared in a recent email to you all:
Anxiety is up from 6.33% to 50.9%
Depression is up from 14.6% to 48.3%
PTSD is up from 7% to 53.8%
Stress is up from 8.1% to 81.9%
(These are reported within the general population during the COVID-19 pandemic from a variety of countries)
While these numbers are completely overwhelming, learning to work with what we can control is a great place to start.
Our daily rhythm, the foods we eat, the ways we unwind, and how we use our precious energy throughout the day are things we can hone and habituate to our benefit.
Through many mind-body practices, nutrients, and nature we can boost our feel good neurotransmitters, and learn how to feed our bodies and brains for optimal health and vitality.
In honor of mental health awareness month, and when speaking with today’s podcast guest, Dr Andrew Hill, one of the top neurofeedback practitioner and peak performance coaches in the country, I want to share very integral elements to support my brain optimization.
Founder of Peak Brain Institute, host of the Head First Podcast, and lecturer at UCLA for over a decade on psychology, neuroscience, and gerontology topics, Dr. Hill is an expert most of us could use in our lives.
If you've been struggling, be sure to have a listen, take notes (this episode is full of great info), and learn how you can support yourself through it all.
LISTEN AND HEAR:
What is neuroscience and neurofeedback?
How can we understand and fine tune our brain waves to support our brain health
Dr. Hill's top three guidelines for brain health (including foods, circadian rhythm, and sleep)
How our blood sugar and insulin levels relate to our brain function (my favorite part!)
The most impactful micronutrients (supplements) for brain health
