"OWNING OUR STORY AND LOVING OURSELVES THROUGH THE PROCESS IS THE BRAVEST THING THAT WE'LL EVER DO"
BRENE BROWN
A few weeks ago, on my most recent women's weekend retreat, we sat in our socially distanced circle and talked about what we have each been going through during the pandemic.
It felt very important and healing to have this conversation, to acknowledge that we are all in the same storm –– in very different boats.
One woman shared about her struggles with alcohol, another about her loneliness through the pandemic and another about never getting a break form her small children who are now always home.
Along with the many tears, there was so much empathy, connection and support.
Let’s take a breath and acknowledge that 2020 has been an overwhelming (and often traumatizing) time to live in the world for so many reasons.
Healing begins when our bodies can down-regulate the fight or flight response and our minds can begin to make sense of it all.
And...telling our story offers us an opportunity to reorganize our sense of self.
As trauma expert Peter Levine says:
"Trauma is not what happens to us, but what we hold inside in the absence of an empathetic witness."
That said, today I have for you an extra special podcast guest. Adelaide Perr has been a long time client and throughout the story she shares on today's episode and in her new book, Degloved ~ Every Scar Has A Story, I was by her side each step of the way.
As summer turns to fall (or maybe winter?), I am thrilled to bring you a warm cuppa hope, resiliency and transparency that will stretch across physical trauma, mental health challenge, true love and accepting heart-braking setbacks.
The complicated relationships many of us have with our own scars, both seen and unseen.
An interesting perspective on navigating health, while you are in the thick of PTSD.
How sharing our stories, with honesty and transparency, transforms the foreign into the familiar.
How these glimpses into trauma, trust, healing and transformation will inspire you to stand strong, build resiliency and persevere (because you are stronger than you think).
DEGLOVED is about perseverance as well as failure, written to give hope to those living with mental illness, and anyone who has had a traumatic event thrust upon them, which threatened to destroy their lives.
I hope you enjoy this episode and check out Adelaide's new book ~ Degloved HERE!
MEET ADELAIDE PERR:
On October 18th 2014, Adelaide was in a bike crash that would change her life. She went through the driver's side window of a car that pulled in front of her, suffering injuries that almost killed her - and emotional trauma that would continue for years to come. In addition to facing the physical injuries and PTSD, Adelaide worried about how the crash would affect her ability to cope with her bipolar II. After an arduous recovery, she returned to riding, eventually qualifying to become a professional triathlete. She is an advocate for cyclists' safety and strives to help others who have suffered life-threatening crashes. Adelaide lives with her husband Kennett and their dog Maybellene.
